We've been making a lot of trips between Houston and College Station lately (we can do it in an hour and 15 minutes, provided there's no traffic and no speed traps) and it seems like a new fruit stand pops up every day.
One of the more permanent ones is DiIorio Farms. They've got two locations: a small stand on TX6 right before 290, and a larger market in Hempstead, TX. Not all their produce is local, but it's all fresh and delicious. Last Saturday we bought a basket of local peaches and a quart bag of fresh black eyed peas.
The peaches became a tasty, simple dessert. First, we sliced them up, put them in the bottom of a glass baking dish, and sprinkled a healthy amount of Splenda on top. Then we mixed up some biscuit dough with Bisquick Heart Smart and Silk soymilk and spooned that over the top. We topped that with more Splenda and some pats of margarine, and baked it at 350 for about 45 minutes. It's not as delicious as real-sugar, real-butter peach cobbler, but it's a whole lot better for you, and anything involving fresh peaches has to be good!
