Last night we went to see a movie at the Showboat Drive-in Movie Theater near Tomball, Texas. It was the best $20 date night we've ever had!
The Showboat is located on FM 2920, a country road between Tomball, TX and Highway 290. The line for the drive-in starts as much as a mile back in each direction, with local traffic pulling onto the shoulder to avoid the delay. Cars turn from FM 2920, pass a lighted marquee sign with a listing of which movies are playing on each of the two screens and whether either is sold out, and stop at a ticket booth. Adults are $6, children $4, and babies free --- a bargain compared to the prices at your local mall cinema! Your ticket buys you entry to a double feature. This weekend it was Madagascar 3 and What to Expect When You're Expecting, or Snow White and the Huntsman and Men in Black III. You can leave after the first film, arrive for the second, or stay for both.
We were parked near the back, but still had a great view of the screen, and could adjust the audio to a comfortable level via our car stereo. A nice cool breeze blew through the windows and mosquitoes didn't seem to be a problem at all. A concession stand sells typical movie fare at deeply discounted prices (popcorn for $1.80!), but in the interest of health we brought a picnic. We planned to buy drinks at the concession stand, but one the film started we forgot all about it!
Many of you have probably never been to a drive-in theater, so if you're having trouble imagining what it looks like check out the photo below. These cars are parked to see Madagascar 3 on a screen just to the left of the frame, and the building at the back is the concession stand and projection booth. It's really that simple --- you drive up, park, and watch a movie from your car!
